Issue 8 Spring 2011 - From the Editor

Hello fellow family travellers!

Whew, what a winter we’ve had. So much has happened in the life of the Family Holiday & Leisure team. While working on this splendid spring issue, we've simultaneously been packing and unpacking and then packing and unpacking some more. Not only has our company moved to our new head office in the heart of Sea Point, but Carl and I, with our two girls, upped and moved to the magnificent seaside town of Knysna! How does that saying go? A change is as good as a holiday… well in this case it certainly is.

For the most part, it has all gone smoothly – we won’t mention the names of any South African telephone and internet providers.

Amidst all this change we are still thinking about you and we hope you’ll enjoy this issue. In Mexican waves (page 24) we find out that Mexico is about much more than limp-bodied, sombrero-donning figures reclining in the desert sun. For people with a sense of culture and adventure, we explore Poland, the land of Chopin, castles and gingerbread houses (page 30). Mauritius cheap? Never, you say. Well, on page 34 regular contributor Ant Pascoe tells us how to do an entire family holiday in Mauritius - on the cheap...

With heritage day approaching on September 4th, do you ask yourself how much of South Africa your children have experienced? On page 58 Gina Hartoog offers 10 places to visit with your youngsters – places which are unique and inspiring to our country.

How often do you and your spouse exchange glances when the porter drops your bulging over-sized suitcases, laptop bags and stuffed teddies in your hotel room? He’s sweating from buckling under the weight, he lingers, or not, and is gone. You should have tipped him or you did but weren’t sure if you gave him enough…too much? Read Tipping etiquette on page 84 for some advice.

My advice? Kindness in words creates confidence. Kindness in thinking creates profoundness. Kindness in giving creates love ~ Lao Tzu

Until next time!

Place of the Rising Sun

Shelley PointWatching the sun rise over St Helena Bay on a crisp morning in April, my thoughts drift over the words of James Russell Lowell when he wrote “It is right precious to behold, the first long surf of climbing light, flood all the thirsty east with gold.”

MexicoWhen one thinks of Mexico, one often conjures up images of a limp- bodied, sombrero-donning figure reclining in the desert sun, with nothing but a bottle of Olmeca’s finest to keep him company.

Paradise on the Cheap

Icecream at Belle MareStory and photographs by Anthony and Mellissa Pascoe

We’ve all seen them advertised and we’ve all been tempted - those glossy ads in the weekend papers for package trips to Mauritius. Five nights at a luxury resort for an amount that may or may not be reasonable. Damn, they are tempting!
